Fun Events Raise Money for Great Causes this Weekend in Southern Maryland, Feb. 17-19, 2017

There is always a lot going on in Southern Maryland, and many times, those events are benefitting organizations doing work in the region. This weekend is no different; here are three events that put the “fun” in fundraiser. They’re all happening this weekend, Feb. 17-19, 2017.

Science Center Hosts Dinner and a Show to Benefit Spring Dell Center

Join the Spring Dell Center for dinner and a show at the James E. Richmond Science Center! The event will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17, at the science center in St. Charles High School, 5305 Piney Church Road in Waldorf.

Guests will enjoy a showing of “Wonders of the Arctic” in the state-of-the-art, 60-foot diameter Digital Dome Classroom, have an opportunity to select a second movie, and enjoy special presentations on the 6-foot diameter NOAA Science on a Sphere.

Tickets to the show are just $5 each, and guests can purchase dinner for only $3 more. Proceeds from the event will support programs focused on connecting adults with developmental disabilities to the community and employment. The event is one of many that will be held in celebration of the Spring Dell Center’s 50 years of supporting people with developmental and intellectual disabilities in the community.

Play Cornhole to Help the United Way!

Love to play cornhole? Here’s your chance to play for a great cause!

The James Risinger for Mardi Gras King Fifth Annual United Way of Calvert County Cornhole Throwdown will take place Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Greene Turtle, 98 Solomons Island Road South in Prince Frederick.

Registration begins at 1 p.m., and bag throwing begins at 2 p.m. Cost is $25 per person and $50 per team of two players. The tournament is sponsored by the Greene Turtle, Lighthouse Engravings, and DJ Todd Allen. It will take place inside the restaurant. Championship trophies and cash prizes will be awarded.

Not a cornhole player? Come cheer in your favorite players and enjoy great food and drinks. Ten percent of all food and drink sales that day will go to the United Way of Calvert County.

Frozen Heart Races Support Southern Maryland’s Homeless

The Chesapeake Bay Running Club (CBRC) will host the Fourth Annual Frozen Heart 50K Trail Race on Saturday, Feb. 18, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Mary’s River State Park in Callaway.

The event’s three-loop course allows for race distances of 50K, 34K, and 17K. Participants in the last few years have battled snow, ice, sleet, hail, rain and mud as they raced the challenging course for up to 30 miles. Frozen Heart runners are ready for whatever nature has in store!

Last year the event, raised $3,500 to support Wrapping Arms ‘Round Many (WARM) and St Mary’s Caring soup kitchen. Proceeds from this year’s event will be supporting these organizations again as well as the Three Oaks Center’s Southern Maryland Veterans Initiative.
