It all started in a two-story home on Fenwick Street in Leonardtown.

Following the urging of the local paper, a group of seven St. Mary’s County residents got together to form St. Mary’s Hospital in March of 1912. Their goal was simple: Allow local patients to receive quality and compassionate care close to home.

Before the hospital opened, residents with critical diseases or anyone needing surgery had to travel to Washington, DC, or Baltimore. The trip was an ordeal, and these volunteers knew a local hospital could make treatment easier for everyone.

The small country hospital grew, moving to a location on Route 5 in Leonardtown just three years later. About 15 years after that, an annex was built. A population boom in the 1940s spurred by the opening of the Naval Air Station Patuxent River led to a series of expansions, additions, and upgrades that continued throughout the 1970s and 1980s and into today.

Today, the hospital is part of Medstar Health, a nonprofit healthcare organization. It has been recognized as one of the top small hospitals in the region, and is the five-time recipient of the Delmarva Medicare Excellence Award. The hospital has 103 beds, and employs more than 1,200 people, which makes it one of the largest employers in the county.

More than the building at St. Mary’s Medstar Hospital has expanded since its Fenwick Street beginnings more than 100 years ago. Its services have expanded as well, transforming the hospital to a medical center with a long list of inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services. Those services include screening and diagnostics, behavioral health, oncology, orthopedics, women’s health, radiology, hospice, and more.

The hospital’s Health Connections provides community outreach and education through classes, fairs, demonstrations, and support groups. Free and low-cost programs ensure that information and resources are available for all.

In Charlotte Hall, patients can receive some services closer to home at several locations in Charlotte Hall: The Medstar St. Mary’s Medical Center at Charlotte Hall, PromptCare at Charlotte Hall, and the Medstar St. Mary’s Hospital Laboratory Center at Charlotte Hall.
