Memorial Day Weekend is the official start of summer – and also an opportunity to honor those who lost their lives in service to our country. You can observe the holiday at one of these events happening in Southern Maryland this weekend, May 26-29, 2017.
Summerseat Hosts Memorial Day Celebration and Concert
Celebrate Memorial Day at Summerseat Farm with a day of history and music!
Summerseat presents its Memorial Day Celebration and Concert on Sunday, May 28, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The event will recognize current and veteran military members.
The day’s events will include a Confederate Veterans Civil War Encampment, 1800’s cooking and outdoor living demonstrations, Boy Scout Demonstrations, local music, children’s activities and crafts, a chance to feed our farm animals, and much more. Popular local musician Joseph Norris will play music and tell stories of the Civil War and local history during the day.
The highlight of the day will be an outdoor “Twilight Concert” by the “Band of America’s Few.” The concert, which will begin at 5 p.m., honors the flight of Naval and Marine Corps aviators and astronauts. This band, with 50 musicians performing at this concert, is comprised of veteran and retired U. S. Marine Corps musicians who give special performances this time of year.
Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy the whole day! Cost is $10 per family and all current and veteran military families will be admitted for free.

Memorial Day Services and Ceremonies Planned throughout Southern Maryland
Chesapeake Beach: The American Legion Stallings-Williams Post 206 in Chesapeake Beach will mark Memorial Day on Monday, May 29, with a ceremony and open house. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at Veterans Park in Chesapeake Beach. Commander Charles E. Choux will hold an open house at the post beginning at 1 p.m. The post is located on Route 260 in Chesapeake Beach. All are invited to both events. For more information, call 410-257-9878.
La Plata: Remember and honor the men and women who died while in military service at the Town of La Plata’s annual Memorial Day ceremony. The event will take place Monday, May 29, at 10 a.m. at the La Plata Town Hall, 305 Queen Anne St. in La Plata.
Waldorf: Veterans of Foreign Wars 8810 in Waldorf will host a Memorial Day service on Monday, May 29, at 11:30 a.m. at the VFW, 2310 Old Washington Road in Waldorf. For more information, call 301-645-6331.
