121916-petfood-01A few weeks ago, we told you about the many food banks available in Southern Maryland to assist people and families in need of food and other basic essentials.

Many families also have pets, and when money is tight, some of them make the heartbreaking decision to surrender their pets to shelters and rescue organizations as a way to save money. Giving up a pet is a difficult decision, and it can make life more stressful for families in need. Pets offer comfort, and they make people happy.

We’re lucky in Southern Maryland to have several pet food banks whose goal is to help people in need be able to keep their pets. Contact each organization directly if you need assistant or would like to donate.

SMAWL Pet Food Pantry: The St. Mary’s Animal Welfare League accepts donations for its pet food pantry at Petco stores in Leonardtown, Prince Frederick, La Plata, and Waldorf. Donations are also accepted at Pepper’s Pet Pantry in Calloway and at St. Mary’s County Department of Public Safety’s Animal Control Division. Please note that some of these programs may require that the pet be spayed or neutered before you can receive assistance. If your pet isn’t altered, inquire about the many low-cost spay and neuter programs in Southern Maryland.
