Charles County Women’s Fair Seeks to Uplift Local Women

The Charles County Women’s Fair is this weekend!

The fair will take place Saturday, March 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the College of Southern Maryland La Plata Campus Center for Business and Industry, 8730 Mitchell Road in La Plata. It is sponsored by the Charles County Chamber of Commerce with the support of College of Southern Maryland, Southern Maryland Newspapers, and University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center.

Cost is $35 per person and includes breakfast, lunch, goodie bags and women’s health, wellness and education sessions.

The women’s fair will include speakers, presenters and exhibitors aimed at uplifting and educating today’s woman. Attendees can expect two full breakout sessions with presentations provided by a variety of speakers covering topics related to reaching your full potential in business, stress management, and more. In addition, attendees will enjoy a health and wellness exhibit including blood pressure screenings, stroke and diabetes education, and women and heart disease education. Interactive yoga demonstrations, seated massages, hand dip paraffin waxes, and a self-defense classes are also planned. In addition, local businesses and nonprofits will display their products and services in the exhibition hall as well.

The keynote speaker is Latisha Durham, the Integrated Navigation, Controls and Displays Systems Lead for the Navy’s E-2D Advanced Hawkeye. She seeks to inspire young minority women to be exposed to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through mentorship and after-school educational programs. Finally, you don’t want to miss the unveiling of a unique visual wall of women sponsored by the Zonta Club of Charles County, College of Southern Maryland, and other local civic organizations recognizing women in the community who embody the characteristics that inspire, motivate, and educate themselves and others to be their best.

Who Will Win the First Annual Southern Maryland Lip Sync Battle?

The Patuxent High School Girls Basketball Program will host the First Annual Southern Maryland Lip Sync Battle on Saturday, March 18, at 6 p.m. The school is located at 12485 Southern Connector Blvd. in Lusby.

This family friendly competition is family friendly and for all ages! The winner will receive a cash prize.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. You can mail check or money order to Patuxent High School, Girls Basketball/Lip Sync Battle, 12485 Southern Connector Blvd., Lusby, MD 20657. Or, contact Cindy at 443-365-0196 to get your tickets at PHS.

Students Take on Law Enforcement in Charity Basketball Game

Students from Mother Catherine Academy in Mechanicsville challenged local state and county police departments to a game of basketball – and the officers accepted!

The game will take place on Sunday, March 19, from noon to 4 p.m. at the school, 38833 Chaptico Road in Mechanicsville. Cost is $10 for adults, $ for kids, and free for children 6 and younger. T-shirts will be available for sale for $20.

Proceeds will be donated to the family of Nolan Scully. This is the MCA’s second annual Local Heroes Project, a program at Mother Catherine Academy designed to teach students the virtue of charity.
