Allergy sufferers know that spring in Southern Maryland can leave you sniffling and snuffling through the day. If you love to garden, spring is doubly painful. Not only is your nose running and your eyes itching – but you can’t get out and plant, either!

But there’s reason to rejoice! Freshome recently wrote about six colorful flowers that release minimal amounts of pollen. These plants re perfect for the gardens and yards of those will allergies. You get your spring color without the consequences.

So, what should you plant? Freshome lists six plants, but these are our favorite three:

  • Pansies: Pansies are bright and available in many different colors. Even better, if you’re a newbie gardener, they’re pretty forgiving.
  • Bougainvillea: This plant comes in pink or orange, and it’s low pollen count makes it a great choice for allergy sufferers. Plus, it is drought tolerant.
  • Begonias: Don’t despair if you have a shady yard. Begonias do well in the shade, and they come in a variety of colors. Some can even be as tall as two feet!

What other flowers does Freshome recommend for those with allergies? Check out the whole list here.
