It’s finally summer in Southern Maryland, and the skies are staying light until late into the evening. Does the light cheer you up as much as it does me?

For most of us, light lifts our spirits and makes us happy. But if there’s a room in your house that feels all doom and gloom, don’t worry – there’s a way to make it feel light and bright! Whether it’s a basement room or a small bathroom or bedroom, Curbed offers several hacks for making your room feel brighter.

These are our favorites:

  • Go bold with a big chandelier or statement pendant light. If your room is dark but on the bigger size, Curbed says to go big. You’ll get great light and amp up your design.
  • Place lights strategically around the room. Place task other types of lights in helpful places around your room. Don’t put a light in a corner where no one sits, Curbed says. Rather, place a light next to a chair or sofa where someone might read or work.
  • Hang big mirrors. Mirrors reflect light and can trick you into thinking that a room is bigger than it is. Hang across from a window to reflect the natural light that comes in.
  • Mix up your light sources. Add several layers of light around the room to create ambiance and brighten up the space.
