Ah, home renovations. It’s so much fun to plan, design, and choose colors and materials.

What can be not as much fun? The actual renovation!

Hiring contractors to work in your Southern Maryland home can be stressful on the whole family. If you’re planning a home renovation project this summer, you’ll want to see these tips we recently read about at RealtyTimes.com.

The first tip? If your renovations are extensive, move out! There’s no point in confining your family to just a few rooms or using a makeshift kitchen for days or weeks. Find a friend or relative to stay with or book a few nights at a hotel – and watch the family’s stress levels drop.

While you’re away, you may be tempted to camp out at home while the work is being done. RealtyTimes.com says it is important to check in on the progress of the work – especially at key points in the process – but hovering is going to stress out you and your contractor. Check in, be available, but don’t hover.

You’ll also be happy if you set your budget for the project at little higher than you think you need. We’ve all watched enough reality home design TV shows to know that something unexpected always comes up during a home reno project. RealtyTimes.com recommends padding your budget by at least 10 percent.
