090516-wine-01The fun doesn’t slow down in Southern Maryland now that school has started and fall is approaching. Check out these unique events taking place in Southern Maryland this weekend – all for great causes!

SMCIL Hosts Wine Tasting Fundraiser

Join the Southern Maryland Center for Independent Living on Friday, Sept. 9, for a wine tasting at Port of Leonardtown Winery! The event takes place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at winery, which is located at 23190 Newtowne Neck Road in Leonardtown.

Tickets are $25 each and include a glass of wine or six tastings. Appetizers will be served. Proceeds from the event will benefit SMCIL’s Disabled Veterans Support Network. It will help individuals purchase assistive technology like mobility ramps, vehicle modifications, iPads for communication, shower seats, wheel chairs. These and other items ensure independence in the community where they live.

090516-walk-01Walk for Suicide Prevention Brings Awareness

The Out of Darkness Walk for Suicide Prevention will take place Saturday, Sept. 10, at 9 a.m. in Indian Head. The walk will begin at the Indian Head Pavilion on the Village Green.

The goal of the walk, which is organized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), is to raise awareness and funds to allow the AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the walk begins at 10 a.m. Online registration for the walk will close at noon on Friday, Sept. 9. You can also register in person at the walk beginning at 9 a.m. Walk donations will be accepted until Dec. 31, 2016.

The British Invasion Comes to Jefferson Patterson Park

It’s the British Invasion – in 2016!

Beatles tribute band Hard Day’s Night will perform Saturday, Sept. 10, during the Friends of Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum’s Affair at Point Farm. The park is located at 10515 Mackall Road in St. Leonard.

The fundraising event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a cocktail party for VIP ticket holders followed by a catered dinner and open bar. The evening concludes with a two-hour concert by Hard Day’s Night in full Beatles regalia playing classic Beatles tunes.

VIP tickets are $100, and general admission tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door. Proceeds benefit a new learning space at JPPM, the JPPM Education Station.
