It’s the first full weekend of August, and there’s still so much summer left in Southern Maryland! How will you spend these weeks before school starts? Check out just three of the events happening in the region this weekend, Aug. 3-5, 2018.

Piney Point Lighthouse Marks National Lighthouse Weekend

Southern Maryland lighthouses are a huge part of its history, and this is the weekend to celebrate them!

The Piney Point Lighthouse Museum and Historic Park will host events for National Lighthouse Weekend this weekend. The event will take place Saturday, Aug. 4, and Sunday, Aug. 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. The lighthouse is located at 44720 Lighthouse Road in Piney Point.

The lighthouse will hold an open house with tours of the museum, the Potomac River Maritime Exhibit, the lighthouse tower, and grounds. The keeper’s quarters and lighthouse will offer tours featuring Lightkeeper Mr. and Mrs. Yeatman along with items by local artist Mary Gault.

National Lighthouse Day is Aug. 7, and was by Congress in 1989. The date is the anniversary of the signing of the Aug. 7, 1789, Congressional Act “for the establishment and support of lighthouses, beacons, buoys, and public piers” and the date of the first commissioned Federal lighthouse.
