Find Family Fun – and Great Crabs! – at the Crab Festival

It’s an annual tradition no one in Southern Maryland wants to miss: The annual crab festival!

The Leonardtown Lions Club will host its 33rd Annual St. Mary’s County Crab Festival on Saturday, June 9, from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. The event takes place at the St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds in Leonardtown.

Admission is $5 per person, and kids age 11 and younger are free. Food purchases are extra.

The festival is the place to be if you love crabs! You’ll find steamed crabs, crab soups, crab cakes, and other seafood dishes available for purchase. You can also browse regional crafters, enjoy local entertainment and live music, and check out the classic car show.

Relay for Life Fights Back Against Cancer

When 68 teams come together in La Plata this weekend, they’ll be joining millions across the country in the fight against cancer. They’ll also be celebrating the lives of those who have battled cancer and remembering those taken by the disease.

It’s all part of the Charles County Relay for Life, which takes place Saturday, June 9, from noon to midnight at the Charles County Fairgrounds in La Plata. The registered teams will take turns circling the track for 12 hours in a demonstration of their commitment to creating a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

This year, there will also be crafts and vendors, food trucks, a moon bounce, dunk tank, super heroes, music and more. Survivors walk at noon, and every hour there will be a new theme lap.

Youth Orchestra Performs Opera Greats with Guest Singer

If you love opera, you won’t want to miss the Southern Maryland Youth Orchestra’s next performance!

The orchestra will be performing a show of operatic greats with opera star Kevin Short, a Southern Maryland native. The concert will take place Sunday, June 10, at 4 p.m. at the La Plata United Methodist Church, 3 Port Tobacco Road in La Plata.

Selections include music from Bizet’s Carmen, Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, the Mephistopheles Arias from Gounod’s Faust, and some beloved American spirituals. Suggested donations at the door are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors, children, military, and teachers.

Short is a Lackey High School and Morgan State University graduate and holds advanced degrees in opera performance from the Curtis Institute of Music and Juilliard. In 1989, he won the bass-baritone award for the Middle Atlantic region Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and from 1991-1998 he appeared annually at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City where he sang many major operatic roles and appeared in a total of 129 performances. Since then, he has performed in most of the major opera houses in the United States and made numerous international appearances. In the past year, he has held a Visiting Faculty position in the Voice/Opera division of the University of Maryland School of Music.
