Fall Begins with Family Fun in Southern Maryland This Weekend, Sept. 21-23, 2018

Can you feel it in the air yet? It’s nearly fall! The new season arrives this Saturday, Sept. 22, but that doesn’t mean the calendar of events is slowing down. Check out these three family-friendly events happening in Southern Maryland this weekend, Sept. 21-23, 2018.

Let It SNOW in Charles County

Forget fall! Charles County is skipping right to winter this weekend for an indoor snowball fight!

The largest indoor snowball battle in Charles County returns on Friday, Sept. 21 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Somers Community Center gym, 300 Willow Lane in La Plata.

There will be more than 1,000 indoor soft snowballs for a night of fun and feats of skills! Defy the weather with a winter wonderland – without the mess and slush. This is event is open to children age 4 to 10. Preregistration is encouraged, and registration includes a light snack.

Cost is $5 for residents and $6 for nonresidents. Admission is $8 the day of the event. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Experience SoMd History for Free on Museum Day!

Saturday is Smithsonian Magazine’s Museum Day, and two local museums are celebrating with FREE admission!

Admission to St. Clement’s Island Museum in Colton’s Point and Piney Point Lighthouse Museum & Historic Park in Piney Point will be free to all Museum Day ticketholders on Saturday, Set. 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is part of Smithsonian Magazine’s 14th annual Museum Day, a celebration when participating museums’ emulate the free admission policy of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, DC, museums.

Museum Day tickets are available for download at https://www.smithsonianmag.com/museumday/museum-day-2018/. Visitors who present a Museum Day ticket will gain free entrance for two at a participating venue of their choice on Sept. 22. One ticket is permitted per email address, and tickets may only be used at one location. Additional guests not included in the Museum Day ticketing will be charged regular admission rates.

Celebrate Local Waterways at RiverFest

The St. Mary’s River is the star of the show at the annual RiverFest this weekend.

The event will take place Saturday, Sept. 22, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Historic St. Mary’s City, 47418 Old State House Road in St. Mary’s City.

Sponsored by the St. Mary’s Watershed Association and Historic St. Mary’s City, the event includes live music, environmental and children’s activities, kayaking, militia muster, tall ships, and more.. Don’t miss the annual Wade-In for Clean Water with state Sen. Bernie Flower. Admission is free.
