How will you fete Mom this weekend? Why not enjoy a fun day out in Southern Maryland? There’s a lot going on here this weekend, and here are just three events we think you will enjoy.

Get Close to Big Rigs at Touch A Truck!

Know a kid who loves big trucks? They’ll LOVE Touch a Truck!

The Center for Children will host its annual Touch a Truck event on Saturday, May 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Regency Furniture Stadium, 11765 St. Linus Drive in Waldorf. Cost is $8 for adults and $3 for kids are 1 to 16. Children younger than age 1 are free.

You’ll be able to get up close to one-of-a-kind vehicles and big trucks! Climb inside and learn how they work. There will also be food for purchase, local vendors, and more! Plus, each paid admission receives at free ticket to Saturday night’s Southern Maryland Blue Crabs game against the Road Warriors.

Celebrate Local Art at the Calvert Arts Festival

Local art and local wines are on tap for the 11th Annual Calvert Arts Festival!

The event takes place Saturday, May 12, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at All Saints Church, 100 Lower Marlboro Road in Sunderland.

Sample Patuxent Trail wines and local craft beers and shop outstanding juried artisans. There will also be food for purchase, children’s crafts, raffles, and more. You can take a tour of the historic church buildings and grounds and walk the labyrinth.

General admission to the festival is free. Tastings are $15 with a souvenir glass; you must be 21 or older to sample. A valid ID will be required.

Proceeds benefit parish and community projects, including Calvert Collaborative for Children and Youth, Patuxent Habitat for Humanity, the Child Advocacy Center, Community Ministry of Calvert County, and Project Echo.

Tap Your Toes at Annual Bluegrass Festival

Looking for a day of great, toe-tapping music? Check out the bluegrass festival happening in Leonardtown this weekend!

The Hollywood Volunteer Rescue Squad will host its annual Bluegrass Festival on Saturday, May 12, from noon to 8 p.m. at the St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds in Leonardtown. Gates open at 11 a.m., and the music starts at noon.

Weather permitting, the festival will take place outside. All proceeds from the event go to the Hollywood Volunteer Rescue Squad Building Fund.

Headliner Audie Blaylock’s musical journey is a familiar one in bluegrass music. He grew up in an Appalachian musical family, and his musical education started early, leading to him sharing the stage with some of bluegrass’ finest and most respected artists, including first generation bluegrass character and giant, Jimmy Martin, as well as Red Allen, Harley Allen, Lynn Morris, Michael Cleveland, and Rhonda Vincent.

Blaylock will appear with his band, Redline. Other music acts in the lineup include the Patuxent Partners from Rockville; Jay Armsworthy & Eastern Tradition; Recycled Bluegrass; 15 Strings; Bubby Abell & Spoon Creek; and California Ramblers.

Tickets are $25 per person at the gate; kids age 12 and younger are free with a paying adult. Tickets can also be purchased online at https://hvrs.brownpapertickets.com/. Advance tickets are $20.

Food and drink will be available for purchase, and you can BYOB. There will be 50/50 raffles and vendors selling crafts and merchandise. For more information, visit http://www.hvrs.org/.
