Festivals Headline the Southern Maryland’s Event Calendar This Weekend, Oct. 19-21, 2018

Is there anything better than fall in Southern Maryland?
There’s so much going on this weekend, it’s hard to decide where to go! Here
are just three of the events happening in the region this weekend, Oct. 19-21,
2018.

Celebrate St. Mary’s
College of Maryland at Hawktoberfest

You’re invited to St. Mary’s College of Maryland for Hawktoberfest!

The annual weekend-long event will take place Friday, Oct.
19, through Sunday, Oct. 21. It’s one of the college’s most popular events and
attracts visitors to the waterfront campus for festival fall activities.

The weekend’s free and low-cost events include:

  • Taste of Southern Maryland, Friday, 5 to 7:30
    p.m.
  • 19th Annual Petruccelli 5K, Saturday, 8 a.m.
    race start
  • The Liberal Arts in Action, Saturday, 10 to 10:30
    a.m. and 10:45 to 11:15 a.m.
  • St. Mary’s River Cruises, Saturday, 1 p.m., 2
    p.m., 3 p.m., and 4 p.m.
  • Kids’ Corner, Saturday, 1:30 to 5 p.m.
  • Bamboo Boat Race, Saturday, 4 to 5 p.m.
    (construction begins at 12 p.m.)
  • Crab Feast, Saturday, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
  • Brunch Buffet, Sunday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

American Indian
Festival Honors Native American Cultures

Celebrate and learn about the rich and diverse Native
American cultures during the 10th Annual American Indian Festival this
weekend!

The event will take place Saturday, Oct. 20, from 10 a.m. to
4 p.m. at Patuxent River Park, 16000 Croom Airport Road in Upper Marlboro. Admission
and parking are free.

Enjoy traditional music, dancing, drumming, horsemanship,
exhibits, demonstrations, storytelling, native foods, and more! Kid’s
activities include archery, pony rides, crafts, and basket weaving. Some
activities require nominal fees.

U.S. Oyster Festival Marks
52nd Year in Leonardtown

A beloved Southern Maryland tradition comes to the St. Mary’s
County Fairgrounds this weekend: It’s time for the U.S. Oyster Festival!

Now in its 52nd year, the Oyster Festival is
sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lexington Park and was recently honored by
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan for its more than 50 years of service to the
community. This year’s festival will take place Saturday, Oct. 20, from 10 a.m.
to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 21, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Admission is $10. Kids age 12 and younger are free.

The annual festival features the U.S. National Oyster Shucking
Contest, cooking competitions, a wide range of seafood, and exhibits and activities
surrounding oysters and the watermen’s way of life. The festival also includes
live music, local food, arts, crafts, and beer tasting.
