St. Mary’s County Marks St. Clement’s Island Heritage Day

Come enjoy a day of history, art, and environmental awareness!

The St. Mary’s County Museum Division celebrates the 13th Annual St. Clement’s Island Heritage Day on Saturday, June 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the museum at 38370 Point Breeze Road in Colton’s Point. This event invites the public to enjoy free boat rides to St. Clement’s Island State Park and experience a day of history, wildlife, and art.

Decoy carver Tom Deagle will give carving demonstrations, and an exhibit of his work will be open for viewing inside the museum. Historic St. Mary’s City will present the Native American Woodland Indians with a hands-on exhibit. Re-enactor Mike Barbour will portray colonial land owner Dr. Thomas Gerard, and Friends of the Newtowne Manor House will talk about the restoration of Newtowne Manor House, which is across St. Clement’s Bay. St. Clement’s Hundred Volunteers will have the reconstructed Blackistone Lighthouse open for tours.

Members of the St. Mary’s County Master Gardeners Bay Wise program and the Watershed Restoration Program will show how you can help keep the Chesapeake Bay healthy with gardening techniques and watershed activities. There will be an area for the public to play traditional games, make crafts, and eat free watermelon. Enjoy music by local guitarist Joe Norris from noon to 2 p.m.

On the mainland, the National Park Service’s Chesapeake Roving Ranger van will be on the museum grounds to talk about the benefits of local wildlife. Bring a picnic lunch, camera, binoculars, and plenty of water. Wear comfortable walking shoes, sun screen, and bug spray.

The museum and grounds are handicap accessible but the water taxi and island are not. The last boat ride to the island will leave the museum pier at 2 p.m., and the last boat back to the mainland from the island will be at 3 p.m. In the event of rain or high wind, boat service will be cancelled and exhibitors will be moved inside the museum.
