Hiring a reputable moving company is key to a less-stressful move. Moving is difficult enough; why add shifty movers to the mix?
Moving isn’t cheap. According to the American Moving and
Storage Association, the average in-state move costs $2,300, while the average out-of-state move costs $4,300. That’s no small chunk of change! How can you make sure you’re working with a reputable company?
Start with an estimate, says Realtor.com. You can get your estimate online, over the phone, or in person, but you’ll get the most reliable estimate from an in-person visit with the movers at your home. They’ll see exactly what (and how much) needs to be moved, and you can point out valuable, fragile, and unusual items that will need special care.
Get at least three in-person estimates before making a
decision, Realtor.com recommends. The company you hire should provide you with a written estimate that you and they will sign. Reputable companies will never ask for a deposit up front, and they won’t give you a lowball estimate. Companies that do those things should be avoided.
