Hello, July! America’s birthday is Wednesday, and the celebrations started last weekend around Southern Maryland. There’s still plenty happening to celebrate the Fourth of July. Check out these events happening around Southern Maryland this week and coming weekend.
Fireworks Light the Skies for the Fourth of July in Southern Maryland
Where can you catch Independence Day fireworks? Several displays are planned throughout Southern Maryland for the evening of July 4th:
- Solomons Island: Fireworks begin around 9:15 p.m. Watch from the Riverwalk.
- Indian Head: Fireworks begin around 9:10 following a day of festivities.
- La Plata: Watch the fireworks at the annual Fourth of July event at the Charles County Fairgrounds. Fireworks begin at dusk.
- Waldorf: Fireworks light the sky following Celebrate Charles! And a Southern Maryland Blue Crabs home game.

La Plata Hosts Fourth of July Watermelon Bash
What goes great with fireworks? Delicious summer watermelon!
The Town of La Plata’s annual Watermelon Bash will take place Wednesday, July 4, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. at the Town Hall. Come for hot dogs, waterslides, and plenty of watermelon! Several waterslides will be set up on the lawn to keep you cool and refreshed.

Annmarie Garden Celebrates Bad Art
Can you create bad art?
Find out this Friday, July 6, at Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center’s Bad Art Night! The event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Bad Art Night promises to be a hilarious evening of bad art-making, musical comedy improv, karaoke, a cash prize, and indulgent drinks and snacks.
Inspired by the new “Of a Feather: Birds in Art” exhibit, guests are invited to spend 6 to 8 p.m. creating their best worst piece of bird art using the supplies provided. Baltimore musical improv group “Bad Karaoke Experience” will be adding to the fun by circulating and creating spontaneous songs about the artwork!
At 8 p.m., the creators will wheel and deal, trying to sell their creations to anyone willing to buy them, for any price they can manage. The artist who sells their work for the most amount will receive a cash prize and bragging rights.
Tacky party food, bad karaoke, and a cash bar will round out this unique and fun-filled evening. Admission is $5 per person; must be 21 & older to attend. For more information, visit www.annmariegarden.org or call 410-326-4640.
