School’s back in session, but that doesn’t mean the Southern Maryland event calendar has slowed down! There’s plenty of fun things to do this weekend that is fun for the whole family. Check out just three events happening in Southern Maryland this weekend, Sept. 7-9, 2018.

Historic St. Mary’s City Celebrates Indian Discovery Day

How much do you know about the Native Americans who lived in St. Mary’s City? Explore and celebrate their lifeways and culture at Indian Discovery Day!

Indian Discovery Day will take place Saturday, Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Historic St. Mary’s City, 18751 Hogaboom Lane in St. Mary’s City. Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, $6 for youth, and free for kids age 5 and younger and Friends members.

Throughout the day, you’ll learn new skills, try new crafts, and watch demonstrations. All of this will give you a new appreciation for the people who called this land home before Maryland was founded.

Chesapeake Biological Lab Welcomes Visitors for Open House

What are researchers working on at the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory? Learn more about their work at the lab’s open house!

CBL invites the public to an open house on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the lab, which is located at 146 Williams St. in Solomons. The event is free.

During the open house, visitors can tour the campus and visit the laboratories. You’ll meet many of the researchers and learn about their work. Exhibits and activities include piloting an underwater robot; experiments about toxicology; tours of the research vessel, the Rachel Carson; and a Scientist Selfie Station. Children attending the open house receive a passport and move through the different labs and experiments to have the passport stamped for prizes.

Taste the Beaches this Weekend!

Celebrate all that makes Chesapeake Beach Great!

Taste the Beaches will take place Saturday, Sept. 8, from 1 to 5 p.m. in Chesapeake Beach. This outdoor event has a community block party vibe, with local venues, community attractions, and food. Stop by the Kids Zone and enjoy live music! Admission is free, and food and beverage costs will be determined by each food vendor. No tickets required.

Local restaurant menu items include Italian selections from Mamma Lucia By the Bay, an assortment of food trucks and concessions, and plenty of kids’ menu items. Special guest the Chesapeake Mermaid will visit the Kids Zone, and the Phillips Wharf Environmental Center will be there with its FishMobile. Love raptors? Live Birds of Prey is bringing an owl, falcon, and hawk. Shop from local vendors and artisans for unique items and gifts.
