Free Summer Concerts in Southern Maryland

There are few things better than live music on a summer night. The local concert series in Southern Maryland are getting underway, showcasing local musicians and fantastic military bands. Here are four local concert series to check out.

Sunset Concert Series, Waldorf

These free concerts take place every Thursday this summer at 7 p.m. on O’Donnell Lake in Waldorf. GPS address is 10400 O’Donnell Place, St. Charles, MD. There’s plenty of free parking; just bring chairs and blankets. Coolers are permitted but alcohol and glass containers are not.

June 23: Marguerite and Nexxzit, R&B and soul

June 30: Eric Scott, soul and pop

July 7: USNA Electric Brigade, U.S. Naval Academy rock band

July 28: Earl Carter, jazz and blues

Aug. 4: Peterson Brothers, classic rock and blues

Aug. 11: Groovespan, jazz and standards

Aug. 18: Sin Miedo, salsa

Aug. 25: Sea Chanters, U.S. Navy chorus

Sept. 1: Tomorrow’s Time, classic R&B and funk

Friday Night Summer Concerts, La Plata

All concerts begin at 7 p.m. and take place on the lawn at the La Plata Town Hall.

Concertgoers are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs for sitting. Coolers are allowed, but no alcohol, please. Concessions are available from the town’s food trailer located near the back of the parking lot, and an ice cream truck is also stationed there for your enjoyment. A play area for children, the Kids’ Zone, allows parents to enjoy the concert while keeping an eye on the little ones. With the variety of music styles ranging from country, jazz, oldies, military bands, and classic rock there is something for everyone at the La Plata Summer Concert Series.

Please note that military concerts are usually about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes due to their regulations.

Friday, Sept. 9: Paul Thomas and The M W B Band (50s and 60s oldies)

Friday, Sept. 16: BackFin (pop, rock, oldies, country, blues, funk)

Friday, Sept. 23: Port Tobacco Pickers (bluegrass)

River Concert Series, St. Mary’s City

You can’t beat the backdrop at these free Friday night concerts. The venue overlooks the St. Mary’s River.

The show begins at 7 p.m. and features the Chesapeake Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Jeffrey Silberschlag. The repertoire ranges from classical to light classics to jazz. Guest artists frequently join the orchestra.

Concerts on the Beach, North Beach

Enjoy music with the Chesapeake Beach in the background! These free concerts take place Friday nights at 6 p.m. on the boardwalk in North Beach. Bring a chair and relax in the sand, or grab a bench on the boardwalk.
