“The Tempest” will be performed Aug. 12, 13, 18, 19, and 20 beginning at 7:30 p.m. On four of those nights – Aug. 12, 13, 19, and 20 – the Southern Maryland Youth Orchestra will perform at 7 p.m. before the play begins.

Tickets are $15 for adults; $13 for adult members of the Newtowne Players and members of the Friends of Historic St. Mary’s City; $12 for seniors, military, and students; $10 for children age 6-11; children under six are free.

Tickets for the Thursday, Aug. 18, performance are $10.

Reservations are required. The performance will be on the State House Lawn. Please park near The Shop at Farthing’s Ordinary. Food, beverages (beer and wine included), and icy treats will be available for purchase.

Exiled to an abandoned island in the middle of the sea, Prospero—the former Duke of Milan—grows into a powerful sorcerer. When chance brings his enemies close to his shores, Prospero schemes his revenge against the ones who overthrew him: his cunning sister, Antonia, and Alonso, the King of Naples. Raising a powerful storm with the help of his faithful and spritely servant, Ariel, Prospero brings the shipwrecked king and crew into his world of mystery, danger and enchantment. Family and political drama intertwine with lighthearted comedy and romance as fools, lovers, and villains alike traverse the island in William Shakespeare’s The Tempest.
