Whether you love Southern Maryland’s maritime history or you’re looking for something fun for the kids to do, here are three fun events happening in Southern Maryland this weekend.

Piney Point Marks National Lighthouse Day

Celebrate National Lighthouse Day Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 6-7! Piney Point Lighthouse Museum will host a celebration both days from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Local artists will be on site displaying their crafts for sale, and a special Lego contest is in the works.

On Sunday, Aug. 7, the Piney Point Lighthouse Museum will celebrate the 180th anniversary of the lighthouse’s construction. Have cake in the Keepers Quarters to celebrate the milestone.

Charles County Hosts the 7th Annual Youth Triathlon

080116-triathlon-01A special fitness event – just for kids!

The 7th Annual Youth Triathlon will take place Saturday, Aug. 6, at the North Point Pool, 2500 Davis Road, in Waldorf. Check in and registration begins at 7 a.m. The event begins at 8 a.m. Kids age 15 and younger are invited to participate.

Each child will swim, bike, and run specified distances based on their age group. The awards ceremony starts at 10:15 a.m. at the finish line. Awards will be presented to the first, second, and third place male and female finishers in each category. All participants receive a finisher medal.

New this year: The triathlon will be a chip timed event! Charles County Recreation has partnered with Race Works Gruppetto, the official scoring and timing company of the Fairfax 2015 Police and Fire World Games. Participants will wear a chip that will track their time throughout the course of the event.

Be a Paleontologist for a Day!

Calling all middle school students! The Calvert Marine Museum invites you to be paleontologists for a day!

On Friday, Aug. 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the museum will host a Paleo Day Camp for students entering sixth through eighth grade. This action-filled day includes learning to find and identify fossils at Cove Point beach, a behind-the-scenes visit to the museum’s fossil prep lab, a chance to see the 3-D printer re-creating a Megalodon tooth, and a visit to the museum’s amazing behind-the-scenes fossil collections.

Campers will play Fossil Monopoly to learn just how challenging it is to become a fossil, and explore some of the problems paleontologists face in their work. Snacks and water provided; campers bring their own lunch. Fee is $25 for the day. Pre-requisition required. Call 410-326-2042 ext. 41.
