Labor Day Weekend is upon us, and if you’re looking for one last hurrah before school starts up again, just check out any Southern Maryland event calendar! Here are just three of the events happening in Southern Maryland this weekend, Aug. 31-Sept. 3, 2018.

Event Marks International Overdose Awareness Day

Overdoses and overdose deaths are a nationwide epidemic. On International Overdose Awareness Day, three St. Mary’s County organizations are coming together to spread information about overdose.

The St. Mary’s County Health Department, Beacon of Hope Recover & Wellness Center of Walden, and Walden Behavioral Health will host an Overdose Awareness Day Event on Friday, Aug. 31. From 7 to 9 p.m. The event will take place at Beacon of Hope Recovery & Wellness Center, Millison Plaza, 21770 FDR Blvd. in Lexington Park.

The event is free and the public is invited. Activities include a memorial labyrinth walk, information tables, “feel better” food, remembrance walk painting, and a closing Lights of Hope service.

For more information about this event or Walden’s treatment and recovery services, call 240-298-0212 or email [email protected]. Visit the Walden website at http://www.waldensierra.org/home/.

Historic African-American Schoolhouse Open to the Public

Did you know that one of the best-preserved African-American schoolhouses in the country is right here in Southern Maryland?

The Drayden African-American School house is in St. Mary’s County, sitting on its original site and without significant alterations. The schoolhouse was built in 1890 and was in use until 1944. Panels and signs offer a self-guided tour of the school most days, but this weekend, you have the opportunity to ask experts questions about the school.

The schoolhouse will welcome visitors on Saturday, Sept. 1, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A docent will be on site to answer your questions about the school and the students who studied there.

The school is located at 18287 Cherryfield Road in Drayden.
