How will you spend your Columbus Day Weekend holiday? There is a lot going on in Southern Maryland this weekend as fall kicks into gear. Here are three fun events for the whole family.
Appreciate the Patuxent River this Weekend
The annual Patuxent River Appreciation Days will take place Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 8-9, at the Calvert Marine Museum. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.
Each fall, the museum hosts the celebration of Maryland’s largest and longest river. This two-day event brings the community together in celebration of the river’s rich influence on the region’s quality of life.
There will be free boat rides, live music, a parade, and more. More than 30 arts and crafts vendors will be present selling handmade goods, and there will also be toy boat building, exhibits, demonstrations, displays and educational activities, live animals, and more.
On Saturday, Oct. 8, from noon to 4 p.m., “Bounty of the Patuxent” will offer local wine tasting and local produce for sale. The parade begins at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9.
Admission is free. For more information, visit http://www.calvertmarinemuseum.com/311/PRAD.
Go Mad for Mutts on Sunday!
The Humane Society of Charles County is going mad for mutts again! Mutt Madness, a new pet- and family-friendly event, will take place Sunday, Oct. 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Charles County Fairgrounds in La Plata.
Not only will you and your pups have a blast during this day out, but the two-legged kids will love it, too! A carnival Kid Zone area will have a moon bounce, carnival games, face painting, and more.
For dogs, the day includes a lure-chasing course, agility course, small dog race, and weight pull. Enter your dog in a fun Halloween costume contest! Will you dog win scariest, cutest, most original, lookalike, or one of the other contests?
There will also be vendors and an Adoption Zone featuring adoptable animals from the Humane Society and other local rescue organizations. In the Demo Zone, you can learn about pet first aid, K9 search and rescue, dog obedience, and more.
