A devastating tornado tore through Charles County in 1926, injuring or killing scores of residents.
That tragedy was the push local leaders needed to establish a hospital that would serve those who lived in the county. Just 13 years later, the hospital was large enough have served 408 patients in 1939.
Today, the hospital, which is now known as the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center, has the capacity to serve 42,000 patients each year. That capacity is a sign of the growth of the La Plata-based hospital, which was first known as Physicians Memorial Hospital before becoming Civista Medical Center. The hospital joined the University of Maryland Medical System in 2011, changing its name in 2013. The University of Maryland Medical System is a non-profit, private health system corporation.
Most of the hospital’s services are located at or near the main campus in downtown La Plata. In La Plata, you’ll find an urgent care facility, a primary care office, women’s health, and rehabilitation. There are surgical care facilities in La Plata and Waldorf.
And no matter what you need care for, you’re sure to find it within the hospital’s walls. The hospital offers cardiopulmonary services, an intensive care unit, diabetes education, emergency services, an obstetrics and birthing center, laboratory services, imaging services, oncology, a primary stroke center, orthopedic and sports rehabilitation, and a wound healing center, just to name a few. The hospital also focuses on community education through its blog and classes and events. (Find the complete calendar here.)
Operating out of the renovated Physician’s Memorial Hospital building nearby, the Charles Regional Medical Center Foundation fundraises for the hospital through events like galas, golf tournaments, and more. The UM Charles Regional Auxiliary provides volunteers who work in various capacities throughout the hospital.
