New Year, Lots of Fun! Three Events to Start 2017 Off on the Right Foot

No matter what your resolutions are for 2017, you’re sure to find something to help you achieve your goals happening in Southern Maryland this month. Here are three events happening in the next week that can help you get a new job, get in shape, or learn something new.

010217-resume01Polish Your Resume and Cover Letter at Workshop

Looking for a new job? Re-entering the job market after time away? Get help with your resume at the Calvert Public Library’s resume and cover letter workshop. Job counselor Sandra Holler will be at the library’s Prince Frederick Branch from 1 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Jan 5, to help you write a strong cover letter and resume.

Ms. Holler will work in small groups to give you tips for writing a new resume or editing an existing one. If you already have a resume, bring it with you for editing help. One printed copy is helpful.

010217-basketball01St. Mary’s County Hosts 50+ Basketball League

Do you want to get in shape in 2017? Do it in a fun way with others your age.

The Margaret Brent Recreation Center in Helen will host an eight-week session of pick-up basketball games for players age 50 and up. Open to men and women, the session begins Friday, Jan. 6, and ends Friday, Feb. 24. The games take place from 10 to 11 a.m.

What’s happening in the sky this month?

Find out at the James E. Richmond Science Center’s free “Our Sky Tonight” full-dome planetarium show! The show will take place Sunday, Jan. 9, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the science center, which is in the St. Charles High School at 5305 Piney Church Road in Waldorf.

The show highlights this month’s featured constellations, stars and planets. Doors open at 6:45 p.m.
