You’ve painted the walls, rearranged the furniture, and hung the pictures. But even with all that work, there’s something about your living room that just seems … unfinished, like there is something missing.

What gives?

To find out, ask yourself these questions from the design experts at Houzz. It’s tough being your own designer and working with the same furniture and décor you’ve always had. You might miss new ways to approach your old furnishings.

Do you have a focal point? Natural focal points are fireplaces, built-in shelves, or large pieces of art. Figure out where your eye naturally goes in the room, and create a point of interest there.

Does your seating enhance your focal point? Arrange a sofa or loveseat so that it faces your focal point and cluster the other seating around it to create an intimate area for talking.

Is your rug big enough? If you have an open floor plan, a large rug can create a living room space. You’ll be amazed how much a rug can delineate a space and make it feel separate from the rest of the room.

Do you have window treatments? This is a big one. Valances, curtains, or other window treatments are a classic finishing touch to any room. Plus, you’ll get the added benefit of the privacy they can provide.
