There’s no way to get around it: Landscaping can be expensive, whether you’re hiring professionals or doing it yourself. The first task, the experts at Houzz tell us, is to plan your landscaping so that you’re kind to the environment and your wallet. You’ll avoid costly mistakes or picking plants that can’t or won’t grow in your yard.

Once your plan is in place, it’s time to start shopping, and Houzz has a few tips for getting the most out of your landscaping budget.

Buy smaller pots of plants. Plants in plugs or 3-inch pots are cheaper than their gallon-pot counterparts, and it’s easier for these little plants to adapt to being replanted.

Grow your own. A packet of seeds costs very little, and if you’re willing to do the work and plan ahead, you can start your own seeds indoors or in a dedicated bed in your yard. Transplant them to the right location when they get big enough.

Buy young trees and shrubs. Like small potted plants, younger trees and shrubs are less expensive. You’ll be able to buy more than if you were getting larger plants.
