There’s so much happening in Southern Maryland this weekend that we don’t know where to start! Here are three events happening this weekend, Aug. 4-6, 2017.

Festival Celebrates Plays Written By and Starring Kids!

Talented playwrights come in all sizes!

The 12th Annual Kids Playwriting Festival will celebrate that talent this weekend and next weekend when plays written by Maryland students will be performed in North Beach. The festival and competition is hosted by The Twin Beach Players.

The six winning plays were the winners of a statewide competition that was judged by theatre professionals. The winning plays are:

“Every Bully Has A Story” by Paige Plater (elementary school)

“Its’ Life” by Aaron McDaniel (middle school)

“The Struggle Is Real” by Sadie Storm (middle school)

“Time To Cherish” by Riley Ferver (middle school)

“Heart and Mind” by Cameron Walker (high school)

“Reading Between The Lines” by Sidney Baker (high school)

Performances take place Aug. 4, 7 p.m.; Aug. 5, 7 p.m.; Aug. 6, 3 p.m.; Aug. 11, 7 p.m.; Aug. 12, 7 p.m.; and Aug. 13, 3 p.m. All tickets are $7. Performances will take place at the Boys and Girls Club of Southern Maryland, 9021 Dayton Ave. in North Beach.

“Pouring for Paws” Benefits the Animals of the Humane Society

It’s “Wine O’Clock” somewhere! Taking a ride on the Humane Society of Charles County’s “Pouring for Paws” Wine Tour will make sure you don’t miss it!

Each tickets for the “Pouring for Paws” Wine Tour includes:

  • Round-trip transportation, with pick up from the Waldorf Park and Ride at Old Washington Road and Smallwood Drive.
  • Visits to three local wineries: Romano Vineyard and Winery, Gemery Winery and Vineyards, and Janemaker Winery and Vineyards. The visits include a private vineyard and wine production tour, wine tastings, hors d’oeuvres, and desserts.
  • Access to silent auction items.

Tickets are $100 per person, and all proceeds benefit the Humane Society of Charles County.

Payment may be made online or at the shelter in person via check, cash, or credit card. A $5 service fee will be added to online purchases.

Celebrate National Lighthouse Day at Southern Maryland’s Lighthouses!

Monday, Aug. 7, is National Lighthouse Day, but you can celebrate at these Southern Maryland lighthouses two days early!

The Point Lookout Lighthouse will hold an open house on Saturday, Aug. 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The lighthouse is located within Point Lookout State Park in Scotland. Docents from the Point Lookout Lighthouse Preservation Society will be on hand to answer your questions. There is no charge to enter the lighthouse, however standard park entrance fees apply. Donations greatly appreciated, and all funds go toward restoring the lighthouse to the 1927 time period. For more information, visit www.pllps.org.

The Keeper’s Quarters at the Piney Point Lighthouse Museum and Historic Park in Piney Point will be open on Saturday, Aug. 5, and Sunday, Aug. 6, for monthly tours of the quarters. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults; $3.50 for seniors and military with ID; and free for kids age 5 and younger. For more information, call 301-994-1471.

The St. Clement’s Island Museum in Colton’s Point will celebrate National Lighthouse Day on Saturday, Aug. 5, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 301-769-2222.
