It’s officially 2018 in Southern Maryland! Mark the first week of the new year by getting out and about. Here are three events happening this weekend, Jan. 5-7, 2018.

SMCM Celebrates Military Appreciation Night

Enjoy great basketball as St. Mary’s College of Maryland presents Military Appreciation Night!

The event will take place Wednesday, Jan. 3, as the college’s men’s and women’s Seahawks basketball teams take on the Southern Virginia University Knights in a doubleheader. The women’s game begins at 6 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 8 p.m. Both games will take place in the Michael P. O’Brien Athletics and Recreation Center, 19050 Hill Commons Drive in St. Mary’s City.

All active and retired military and/or their families with identification will have free access to the games. Military personnel-only raffle events will also take place. Additional tickets can be purchased at the door; prices are $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and non-St. Mary’s College students.

Search for a New Job at the Mobile Career Center

New year, new job! The JobSource Mobile Career Center will be at the Calvert Library Twin Beaches Branch on Friday, Jan. 5, from 1 to 4 p.m. Get job counseling and resume help, search for jobs, and connect with Southern Maryland JobSource. No registration required!

Bluegrass Takes Center Stage in Hughesville

Start your new year off right: With toe-tapping bluegrass!

Nothin’ Fancy and Remington Ryde, two headlining groups on the national bluegrass circuit, will perform one big show on Saturday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m. at American Legion Post 238 in Hughesville.

The event is presented by Jay Armsworthy and the Sons of the American Legion.

Doors open at noon, and food will be available for sale from the Sons of the American Legion. Tickets are $20 per person and will be available at the door. Concertgoers under age 12 are free with a paid adult. The legion is located at the corner of Routes 381 and 231 in Hughesville.
