You go up and down them every day – maybe several times a day! – but when was the last time you gave much thought to your staircase?

If you’re bored with your stairwell or entryway, designer and writer Barbara Milner-Mangoni offers easy ways you can make your staircase beautiful with paint. In a recent article at Houzz, she proposes five techniques for breathing new life into this forgotten space.

Our favorite? While we really like the rainbow staircase idea, we’re well aware that bright colors like that wouldn’t work in every home. No, our favorite idea is the “painted runner.” That is, rather than attaching a carpet runner to your stairs, you get the look of one with a strip of paint or stained wood down the middle of each stair.

Whether you go neutral or bold is up to you, and the article offers several pictures of this technique to inspire you.

Do the stairs in your Southern Maryland home need a facelift? You don’t need to be selling your home to try these out. See all of the ideas – including those rainbow stairs! – in the complete article at Houzz.
