Southern Maryland has an active community of animal lovers who volunteer with a variety of organizations across the region. They seek to help homeless pets find homes and to limit the number of animals that die in shelters.

One way they do this is by helping owners keep their pets when they fall on hard times. Imagine losing everything — then having to give up your beloved pet because you can’t afford food or care. The organizations below work to support families and pets in need with low-cost or free services.

February is National Spay/Neuter Month! One way to control the homeless pet population is to have pets spayed and neutered. Several clinics offer low-cost services based on income.

Humane Society of Charles County: Thanks to a grant program, Charles County pet owners who meet income requirements can get free or reduced price spay and neuter services at the shelter in Waldorf. Find out more and apply here: http://humanesocietycc.org/free-spay-neuter-program/
