Summer is winding down, but that doesn’t mean the calendar in Southern Maryland has slowed down! Check out these three events happening in the region this weekend, Aug. 25-27, 2017.

Aqualand Marina Hosts Riverside Car Show this Weekend

Enjoy great cars and a night on the Potomac River this weekend!

Aqualand Marina presents its first annual car show, the Riverside Car Show, on Saturday, Aug. 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the marina, 9700 Orland Park Road in Newburg. Admission is free.

The show will feature great cars, DJ entertainment, local food, and prizes.

All cars are welcome, but participants should register by calling Chip Wood at 240-298-2858.

Get Ready for School at the NAACP 2017 Back to School Fair

The countdown is on for the first day of school!

Get ready at the NAACP 2017 Back to School Fair! The event will take place Saturday, Aug. 26, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Lexington Park branch of St. Mary’s County Library, which is located at 21677 FDR Blvd. in Lexington Park.

Admission is free.

The fair will feature informational mini sessions for parents and students, a school supplies giveaway (while supplies last), and light refreshments. Mini sessions include Smart Ways to Organize, Avoiding Homework Stress, Managing Emotions/Conflict Resolutions, Healthy Nutrition/Health Sleep Habits, Communicating: Developing a Partnership Between the Student/Parent/Teacher, The Impact of Positive School Behavior on Achievement, and more!

Participants will be asked to fill in a ‘Checklist for School Success’ by attending at least three mini sessions to receive school supplies (while supplies last). Each mini session will be approximately 15 minutes. Information tables from many community organizations and partners will be available to browse and learn about everything they have to offer.

Contributors to the Back to School Fair include the NAACP, St. Mary’s County Library, St. Mary’s County Health Department, Zion United Methodist Church, St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, St. Mary’s County Department of Aging and Human Services, St. Mary’s County Democratic Club, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Nu Zeta Omega Chapter, Education Association of St. Mary’s County, and Bright Futures Enlightenment.

Southern Maryland Balloon Festival Takes to the Skies on Saturday

Look up on Saturday, and you just might see a hot air balloon hovering over Calvert County!

The inaugural Southern Maryland Ballroom Festival will take place Saturday, Aug. 26, from 1 to 9 p.m. at Spider Hall Farm, 3915 Hallowing Point Road in Prince Frederick.

This family-friendly event includes tethered hot air balloon rides, live bands, food vendors, a KIDZONE, and more! Festival begins at 1 p.m., and tethered rides begin at 3 p.m. Fireworks and glow balloon show begin at sunset.

Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for kids age 3 to 12. Free parking is available at Hallowing Point Park and the College of Southern Maryland’s Prince Frederick campus. A continuous shuttle service will run throughout the day. Limited handicap parking is available onsite at Spider Hall Farm.

Rain or shine. The festival is presented by Exelon Generation.

Proceeds from the festival will support United Way of Calvert County’s Community Impact & Basic Needs Grants, which provide funding to local nonprofit organizations running evidence-based programs that are making a difference in the lives of those living in Calvert County Maryland.
