Upgrade Your Bathroom on a Shoestring

Which rooms in your home are used by every member of the family? Kitchens and bathrooms. They’re the workhorses of your home, and over the years, they can become worn and drab. When an average bathroom remodel averages $9,275, you may want to consider going to DIY route instead.

You can spruce up your bathroom without breaking the bank, whether you’re prepping your home to put it on the market or just want to give the room a new feel.

Clean it up

This is a basic suggestion, but a clean slate can help you see exactly where you need to begin your bathroom makeover. Clean the room from top to bottom. Get rid of the clutter that typically collects there – cosmetics, the blow dryer, toothpaste, and medicines. If it’s not decorative, put it away.

Take down the shower curtain and liner, and remove throw rugs and towels. Wash them if you’ll be keeping them.

Paper or paint?

The decisions you make for your bathroom walls can be a game changer. A fresh coat of paint or new wallpaper can instantly transform the space. It can make a tiny bathroom feel larger or give the room an entirely different feel. Color works wonders!

Paint and wallpaper both have advantages and disadvantages, so take the time to consider carefully which you’ll use. Wallpaper is harder to work with than paint, and it is much harder to remove. The advantage of wallpaper, though, is that it can provide patterns and textures that are much harder to get with paint.

If you’re not on a tight budget, there are other wall treatments you can consider, including shiplap, board and batten, and others.

Not matter what you choose, the walls are your second task – after cleaning.

Shed some new light

New home builders aren’t particularly experts when it comes to proper lighting techniques. The ubiquitous Hollywood lighting strips in bathrooms are a perfect example of this. Women, especially, rely on proper lighting in the bathroom when applying cosmetics, and lighting above the mirror is the absolute worst for that purpose, according to lighting experts.

These experts recommend attaching lighting sconces at eye-level on each side of the mirror. So, consider this when purchasing new lighting for the bathroom.

Update accessories

New accessories can by everything from small items like new throw rugs to more expensive accessories like a new mirror or new faucets. At the very least, consider buying a new shower curtain and coordinating towels and rugs.

Get rid of plastic switch covers in favor of some of the new ones that come in a wide range off finishes, like aged bronze or brushed nickel. On a larger budget, you can add new life to the bathroom by replacing drawer pulls and cabinet door knobs to match the finish of your new switch plates.

Lastly, don’t forget those walls you worked so hard on. Add some artwork!

According to HomeAdvisor, most homeowners spend between $5,534 and $13,040 to remodel their bathrooms. With a little creativity — and far less money — you can give yours a cosmetic makeover in just a weekend.
