Before the Naval Air Station Patuxent River was established, Lexington Park was home to tobacco farms. Today, the area has grown by leaps and bounds because of the base’s presence and subsequent expansions. Named after the USS Lexington aircraft carrier, which sunk in 1942, Lexington Park has thriving commercial areas along Great Mills Road and Maryland Route 5. Unlike other bedroom communities in Southern Maryland, you’ll find that most people who live in Lexington Park work in the county, most connected somehow to the Navy base.
