Memorial Day Ceremonies Planned for Southern Maryland This Weekend, May 24-26, 2019

It’s Memorial Day Weekend – can you believe it? Before you fire up the barbecue to ring in the unofficial start of summer, take a moment to remember the meaning and purpose of Memorial Day: To honor those who have
given their lives in service to our country.

Here are just three of the events happening in Southern Maryland this weekend, May 24-26, 2019.

Calvert Marine Museum Hosts Special Needs Night

Enjoy programs at the Calvert Marine Museum planned just for families with special needs!

The museum will host a Special Needs Night on Friday, May 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. Admission is free. The museum is located at 14200 Solomons Island Road South in Solomons.

Visit with the river otters, skates and rays, and fish and learn about local maritime history. Take a cruise on the William B. Tennison and meet “Bubbles,” the museum’s otter mascot. The museum store and Drum Point Lighthouse will be open. A special calming room will be provided.

Special Needs Night is offered in cooperation with the Calvert County Parks & Recereation Therapeutic Recreation Services.

Mark Memorial Day in Chesapeake Beach

The public is invited to commemorate Memorial Day with the American Legion Stallings-Williams Post 206 in Chesapeake Beach.

The post will hold a ceremony on Monday, May 27, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Veterans Park. The park is located at the intersection of Routes 260 and 261 in Chesapeake Beach.

Post Commander Les Griffith will conduct the ceremony at the park. Afterward, he will host an open house at the post, which is located on
Route 260 in Chesapeake Beach. All are invited. The National Moment of Silence will be honored at 3 p.m.

Waldorf VFW Plans Memorial Day Ceremony

Mark Memorial Day with VFW Post 8810 Waldorf.

The ceremony takes place Monday, May 27, at noon at the post, which is located at 2310 Old Washington Road in Waldorf. An open house will follow.
