Want to make your room totally unique?

Interior designer Lindsay Coral Harper suggests adding vintage finds to your décor. “Vintage décor helps a home feel sophisticated but still attainable,” she told Southern Living. “A few beat-up furnishings look good to me because they give a room character.”

But, Harper warns, don’t go overboard with antique and secondhand finds. You run the risk of your room looking like a flea market!

Harper has a few things she looks for when she wants to add a personalized, vintage touch to the rooms she is designing:

Interesting brass objects that can be placed on tables. Harper likes inexpensive items that make her laugh.

Drink tables that are always handy when you need an extra table. Find a shape or size you like, she says.

Chairs that catch your eye. Harper buys a chair she likes even if she doesn’t have a room for it yet. It could be the finishing touch for a room later on.

Vintage lighting like chandeliers, sconces, or lamps. Just be sure to ask about the wiring, she says, because it may need to be redone.

Small-town antique stores and malls are Harper’s favorite places to shop. There are plenty of these in Southern Maryland! Which local antique or secondhand store is your favorite?
