With winter temperatures that range from below freezing to flirting with the 60s, it probably won’t surprise you to learn that there are no outdoor ice skating rinks in Southern Maryland.
So where do you go when you want to skate?
Since early 2005, the answer to that question has been Capital Clubhouse in Waldorf. This huge recreation center run by the Charles County government boasts an NHL-size ice rink – and heated bleachers for the fans. The arena also has two multi-purpose sports courts, a rock wall, and is home to World Gym and shops that sell the equipment skaters need. The clubhouse also hosts large events like trade shows, concerts, and conventions.
And if you’ve never been on skates before, Capital Clubhouse also offers skating lessons for all levels from age 4 through adult. The classes are recognized by the US Figure Skating Basic Skills program and will help you get comfortable on the ice, whether you have Olympic dreams, want to play hockey, or just want to learn to skate. Classes are offered year round.
The ice rink at Capital Clubhouse is open for public skating times (see online calendar for current dates), pick-up hockey games, and kid-friendly events like Totsicles for the pre-school set. The rink is also the home ice of the Southern Maryland Sabres Hockey Club, which offers instructional, recreational, and travel teams for kids and adults. You might even catch a local high school hockey game at the arena!
The Capital Clubhouse is located in the Waldorf Marketplace plaza in Waldorf. It is open daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Check the clubhouse’s website and Facebook page for current lesson, hockey, and public skating schedules.
