There’s no reason to travel too far for family fun this weekend! From explorations of local history to a chance to truly shop local, there’s lots to do in Southern Maryland this weekend. Here are just three events happening in the region this weekend, July 13-15, 2018.

Bond with Bugs at Sotterley’s Exploration Friday Event

Who will you find living in the gardens at Sotterley Plantation?

Find out at the plantation’s next Exploration Friday event! These weekly events feature family-friendly guided activities for all ages. On Friday, July 20, from 10 a.m. to noon, participants can hunt for bugs in the gardens of Sotterley. You’ll use magnifying glasses to get an up-close look at insects, and you’ll be able to create a mini butterfly garden planter to take home using recycled materials.

Exploration Friday events are included with plantation admission. For more information and a list of other Exploration Friday themes, visit http://www.sotterleyplantation.com/index.htm.

Explore Archaeology at Historic St. Mary’s City

Once a year, the archaeology lab at Historic St. Mary’s City is open to the public, and this weekend is your chance to visit!

The museum will host Tidewater Archaeology Weekend on Saturday, July 21, and Sunday, July 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Cost is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, $6 for youth, and free for kids age 5 and younger and Friends members.

During the event, you can take a guided tour of the excavations currently happening at the museum, which is one of the best-preserved colonial sites in the nation. The archaeology laboratory will also be open for exploration.
