It’s been a long winter. Do you need a sign that spring is coming?

Friday, April 27, is Opening Day for the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs!

Southern Maryland’s own professional baseball team begins its 11th season with a weekend series at home against the Long Island Ducks. Part of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, the Blue Crabs have been delighting local audiences with real pro ball since 2008. In six of those seasons, the team made the playoffs, and in 2009 and 2015, the team finished runner up in the league’s championship series.

And while this independent league isn’t part of the Major League Baseball farm system, you will see future and past MLB players. In fact, past Blue Crabs players (and others from the Atlantic League) have been signed by big league teams, usually joining those teams at Double A or Triple A minor league affiliates.

Baseball isn’t the only thing you’ll find during a night at the Blue Crabs’ home park, Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf. Fun events are planned throughout the season, including several fireworks nights. Kids love the playground and inflatables, and games and challenges get the audience involved between innings. There’s always something going on along the concourse around the stadium. Mascot Pinch wanders the park, meeting and greeting fans of all ages. And don’t forget classic ballpark food!

The Blue Crabs also give back to the community where their fans live. The team’s philanthropic efforts have supported the Southern Maryland Food Bank, The Salvation Army, College of Southern Maryland, the American Red Cross, and others.

The team was established in 2006 and named by fans. The original owners’ group, called Opening Day Partners, included Baltimore Orioles star and Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson.

Fans can get a sneak peek at the 2018 season during the Blue Crabs’ annual Fan Fest, which will take place on Saturday, April 21, at the stadium.
