Moving to a new Southern Maryland property is exciting, but it can be very stressful, too. Look out for these common moving day problems – and learn how to avoid them.

Bad moving company

Bad moving companies are incompetent and may be completely fraudulent.

The movers don’t show up or arrive late

You agreed on a time with the company, but that time passes. You call the company, but you’re given an excuse. Even more time elapses until the movers finally show up – several hours late. You’ve had a very stressful day and wasted a lot time. At worst, you can’t get in touch with the moving company and you not only lose your day but you also lose the deposit you paid to a fraudulent company that disappeared.

Your movers aren’t prepared

Unprepared movers may arrive in a vehicle that is too small to fit your belongings or they may lack the expertise and equipment to properly and safely handle your valuable items. An incompetent moving company may cram your belongings into a small van and scratch your expensive TV, or drop the set of china that belonged to your grandmother. The result is an emotionally and financially damaging moving day.

The movers are criminals or scammers

This might be the worst potential moving day problem. The moving scammers may ask for much more money than was previously agreed upon, claiming that your move requires extra services. They can even withhold your belongings until you pay an additional fee, or steal your expensive items and abandon the rest.

It’s easy to avoid hiring a bad moving company. Carefully research Southern Maryland moving companies before hiring them and handing over any deposit. Look for a reputable company that is experienced and fully licensed. You may also want to purchase any appropriate insurance for transporting your possessions; it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Problems with traffic

Nothing can derail your moving day faster than bad traffic or accidents.

Stuck in traffic

If the moving truck is late because of traffic, you could run out of time to go ahead with your move. You’ll need to postpone your moving day and go through the stress of moving all over again.

Accidents

An accident along your moving truck’s route could delay the arrival of your belongings. It’s even worse if the moving truck is involved in the accident and your possessions are badly damaged or even worse and lost completely.

The moving truck breaks down

In the event your moving truck breaks down, you will have to wait for a replacement vehicle and for your belongings to be moved to the new truck. This can considerably delay your relocation.

Parking problems

If there isn’t enough space for the moving truck to park, you may have to wait for hours until a suitable space opens, or the moving truck may have to park a long way from your new home. Besides wasting your time, this could lead to extra charges from the moving company for the delay or the extra distance they have to carry your possessions.

Traffic problems are just bad luck. There isn’t much you can do about breakdowns and accidents. Find a reputable moving company that has several vehicles, and make sure to reserve a parking space outside your old and your new homes if possible.

Bad organization

Moving is hectic. Make a step-by-step plan to avoid these common moving day problems.

Last-minute packing

Don’t leave packing to the last minute. You may discover that you have many more possessions to move than you previously thought and that they don’t fit into the moving truck. If you’re not ready when the movers arrive, you lose time and could be charged extra fees for the delay.

Furniture issues

If large possessions and furniture pieces don’t fit through the door, you might have to pay for a hoisting service to have it removed at extra cost or leave behind items that have sentimental value.

Problems with paperwork

More than your belongings need to be transferred to the new property. Many people forget to transfer utilities and don’t have any electricity or water when they arrive at their new property. You can be fined if you don’t change the registration of your car and driver’s license in time.

Safety concerns

Be safe on moving day! Many people suffer injuries and accidents on their moving day by overlooking safety concerns.
