From produce to meat, many people like the food on their plates to be locally grown or produced.
And thanks to Southern Maryland’s wineries and vineyards, the wine accompanying those meals can be local, too!
There are 11 wineries and vineyards on the Patuxent Wine Trail, a map of local wineries compiled by the Maryland Wineries Association. The route extends from Anne Arundel County through Calvert and St. Mary’s counties. With so many local wine choices, there’s sure to be something for everyone!
Maryland’s history as a wine-producing state dates back to 1945, when Boordy Vineyards was founded in the town of Hydes in Baltimore County. Southern Maryland’s climate, in particular, is similar to that of the Tuscany region of Italy. The hot summers allow local growers to cultivate Southern Italian and Mediterranean varieties of grapes like Barbera, Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Chardonnay, Vidal, Blaufrankisch, Symphony, and others.
