Play Local Tourist with the Kids During Winter Break in Southern Maryland!

They may have new toys to play with, but everyone can avoid cabin fever by getting out at about during the upcoming winter holiday break! While the kids are off school, play local tourist at one of these Southern Maryland museums or organizations.

Because of Christmas and New Year’s, many places will have special holiday hours. It’s best to call and verify hours before you go.

“Holidays in Uniform” at Piney Point Lighthouse

Experience a Southern Maryland tradition! The Piney Point Lighthouse Museum and Historic Park presents its annual exhibit “Holidays in Uniform” now through the end of the year. The museum is located at 44720 Lighthouse Road in Piney Point.

Admission is $7 adults; $3.50 for seniors, military with ID, and students age 6-18. Children 5 and younger are free. Until Dec. 22, the museum is open noon to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Dec. 23 through Jan. 1. The museum will be closed Dec. 24 and 25.

St. Clement’s Island Museum Hosts Annual Christmas Doll and Train Exhibit

For 32 years, the St. Clement’s Island Museum has delighted visitors with its annual Christmas Doll and Train Exhibit. Enjoy antique dolls and miniature trains.

Admission is $3 for adults; $2 for seniors and military with ID; $1.50 for students age 6-18; and free for kids 5 and younger. Until Dec. 22, the museum is open noon to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Dec. 23 through Jan. 1. The museum will be closed Dec. 24 and 25.

Enjoy Winter Break Activities at Calvert Marine Museum

Learn local history, visit the otters, and explore the Calvert Marine Museum while you’re on break from school! The Calvert Marine Museum will also host special events during break, including a snow globe workshop, a program on winter wildlife in the Chesapeake, and an exploration of animals and Ice Age changes. Some programs are included in museum admission; others require an additional fee. Visit the museum’s website for more information.

Admission is $9 for adults; $7 for seniors and military; $4 for kids age 5-12; and free for members and children younger than 5. The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be closed Christmas Day.

Experience Annmarie Garden Lit Up for the Season

Don’t let the holidays end! Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center’s Garden in Lights continues until New Year’s Day! Walk the garden and admire the light sculptures and play the “Holiday I Spy Game.” Enjoy live music and performances. A café will be open each night as well as the gift shop and annual ornament show and sale. On Friday and Saturday nights, shop local handmade vendors at pop-up shops.

Admission is $6; children age 3 and younger and members are free. Garden in Lights is open nightly from 6 to 9 p.m. and will be closed Dec. 24 and 25.

Learn Aviation History at the Pax River Museum

Do you know Southern Maryland’s role in naval aviation history? The Patuxent River Naval Air Museum tells the story of the Navy’s flight test center here through exhibits, artifacts, and an impressive flightline of 22 unique aircraft.

Admission is $9 for adults; $7 for seniors and active duty military with ID and their dependents; $4 for kids age 5-12; and free for kids 4 and younger. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.
