Halloween is just 10 days away, and kids love every chance they can get to wear their costume (and maybe collect a little candy). There’s lots going on in Southern Maryland for Halloween, and these events have just the right amount of spookiness for families with kids.
Harvest Halloween Party
When: Friday, Oct. 21, 5 to 7 p.m.
Where: Town Hall, La Plata
Come in costume for the town of La Plata’s annual Harvest Halloween Party! There will be snacks, crafts, treats, and lots of fun for little ones.
Howl-O-Ween Party
When: Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 22-23, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days
Where: PetValu, Leonardtown
Even pets love Halloween! The Animal Relief Fund is partnering with PetValu for family fun. There will be pet adoptions, games, raffles, and a pet costume contest. Plus, pets can trick-or-treat in the store!
Halloween Evening Storytimes
The branches of the Calvert Public Library are hosting slightly spooky storytimes the week before Halloween. Come for stories, songs, and lots of fun. No registration required.

Oct. 27, 6:30 to 7:15 p.m.: Southern branch, Solomons
Oct. 27, 6:30 to 7:15 p.m.: Twin Beaches branch, Chesapeake Beach

Trunk or Treat
Put on that costume, and trick-or-treat from car to car! Many car owners all go all out and decorate their cars. There are several truck or treat events happening in Southern Maryland this time of year. Here are just a few.

Prince Frederick Volunteer Rescue Squad, Prince Frederick
When: Saturday, Oct. 29, 6 to 9 p.m.
Pumpkin Carving and Scarecrow Building
When: Saturday, Oct. 29, 10:30 a.m. to Noon
Where: Smallwood Community Center, Indian Head
Come carve a pumpkin and build a scarecrow in time for Halloween! Bring an old shirt, pants, and a pillow case to make your scarecrow. This is event is designed for kids age 3 to 12. Parent participation is required. Cost is $10 for resident and $12 for non-residents.
Halloween in the Garden
When: Saturday, Oct. 29, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center, Dowell
Come in costume for a fun day in the garden! More than 70 community organizations and businesses will decorate booths, don costumes, and hand out candy and treats. Admission is $1 per person to benefit the Holiday Food Basket Programs, the Annmarie Program Funds, and other organizations. Each guest will receive a free trick-or-treat bag.
Spooky Science
When: Saturday, Oct. 29, 4 to 7 p.m.
Where: James E. Richmond Science Center, St. Charles High School, Waldorf
See how science can be spooky! Featuring popular storyteller Geraldine Buckley, a mad scientist demo with liquid nitrogen, NOAA Science on a Sphere demos, science labs, make and takes, and more. Don’t forget to wear your costume!
Parties and Parades
What’s cuter than kids in a Halloween parade? Not much! Check out these two parties and parades happening in Calvert County.
Calvert County Fairgrounds, Prince Frederick
When: Sunday, Oct. 30, 1 to 3 p.m.
The Optimist Club of Calvert hosts its annual Halloween party for kids age 1 to 13. The afternoon fatures fun and games, crafts, treats, and a special parade. Goody bags and medals for all plus awards for the top three costume winners in five age categories. The parade begins at 2 p.m.; register by 1:45 p.m.
American Legion Post 206, Chesapeake Beach
When: Sunday, Oct. 30, 1 to 3 p.m.
Party and parade at the American Legion Post 206! The event will take place in the upper level hall of the American Legion building. The first annual Poppy Poster Contest will be introduced.
