Learn to Live Green at Annual Festival and Market

It’s easy being green – and you can learn how to live more sustainably at Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center this weekend!

The Calvert County Citizen’s Green Team presents the Green Living Festival and Market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 1. The event
will take place at Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center in Dowell.

This hands-on festival is a day of learning, playing, and engaging with people of all ages and backgrounds with an interest in sustainable, healthy lifestyles. Explore the links between sustainability, energy efficiency, conservation at home and at work, and a healthy environment. Talk with green product and service exhibitors and learn more about home improvement and healthy homes.

The Festival features local foods and spirits, along with homegrown entertainment. Children will enjoy recycled art projects and activities. Presentations and demonstrations throughout the day share the many ways that plants, air, water, soil and energy sustain our homes, our health, and our planet.

Admission is free.

Drayden African American Schoolhouse Hosts Open House

Did you know that one of the nation’s best-preserved one-room African American schoolhouses is right here in Southern Maryland?

The Drayden African American Schoolhouse will host an open house on Saturday, June 1, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The schoolhouse is located at 18287 Cherryfield Road in Drayden.

During the open house, you can check out the renovated schoolhouse and learn about its rich history and importance in St. Mary’s County. Staff will be available at the school during this time to answer any questions and provide information.

The schoolhouse has been closed for several years, but with the completion of the renovations of the building in the spring of 2018, the
public is now able to access this significant historic site on the first
Saturday of each month and during periodic special event weekends. The Museum Division also offers special programs for school, bus, and other tour groups who would like to visit the site. Visitors who would like to see the schoolhouse outside open house hours can contact Piney Point to arrange a visit.

The open house is co-hosted by UCAC—Unified Committee for Afro-American Contributions and the St. Mary’s County Museum Division.
