How much do you know about your local hospital? Over the next few weeks, we’ll feature the hospitals from all three Southern Maryland counties. Let’s start in Calvert County.
Calvert Memorial Hospital was founded in 1919 and was located on Main Street in Prince Frederick until moving to a single-story building at its current location in 1950. In 1978, it moved to its current five-story building, which is adjacent to the old hospital building.
That facility has been expanded and upgraded since then, creating a hospital facility that has 267 active and consulting physicians in more than 40 specialties and 1,000 employees. A crew of 176 volunteers dedicate their time to the hospital and its patients.
Calvert Memorial Hospital is a not-for-profit, community-owned hospital. It is governed by a volunteer community board of directors and supported by the Calvert Memorial Hospital Foundation, which holds events and fundraisers to raise money for the hospital and new equipment. The foundation is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization.
To ensure that Calvert County residents don’t have to drive far to get services, there are also satellite locations in Dunkirk and Solomons. Among other services, these clinics offer physicians and specialists, physical therapy, and urgent care. The medical center in Solomons also offers a lab, imaging, and a community wellness classroom. In October 2016, the hospital added a mobile health center that will bring primary care, preventative programs, and other services to under-served areas of Calvert County.
At the main hospital, you’ll find a variety of services, including an emergency room, behavioral health, women’s health, cancer care, breast care, cardiac services, stroke services, a family birth center, pain management, sleep disorders, and much more. A full list of services is available at the hospital’s website.
Calvert Memorial Hospital also offers classes and workshops on topics including diet and nutrition, exercise, smoking cessation, CPR, family and birth, and more.
The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. It is licensed by the Maryland Department of Health and certified for Medicare and Medicaid.
