We’ve all got that one neighbor … you know the one: Overgrown lawn, junk in the front yard, constant noise at all hours of the night. They’re the hot topic at every homeowners’ association meeting.

Oh, wait. You don’t know that neighbor? What if “that neighbor” is you?!

Southern Maryland’s community governments and neighborhood groups like homeowners’ associations establish ordinances and rules to keep residents and their neighborhoods safe, happy, and healthy. If you live a neighborhood governed by an HOA, you agreed to abide by these rules when you bought your home.

So, if you’re in violation of these rules, you can expect your neighbors to report you to whatever body governs your neighborhood.

If you’re not sure what might set the neighbors off, home renovation guru Bob Vila has shared a helpful list of infractions that might get you reported. What makes the list? Here’s a sampling:

  • Letting your dog run off-leash
  • Consistently being loud at night – especially if there’s a curfew
  • Letting your lawn grow too tall
  • Parking broken-down vehicles in your yard
  • Holding too many garage sales
  • Not shoveling your sidewalk after a snow storm

Bob Vila lists 16 reasons your neighbors might have for reporting you. If you think you might be “that neighbor,” take a look at the list and see whether you’re guilty of any of them – and then fix the problem!

And, if you’re planning to sell your Southern Maryland house anytime soon, you definitely need to get these things in order!
