It’s not cheap to keep your Southern Maryland home humming from day to day, from the cost of electricity to the amount you pay for water. But you don’t have to install solar panels or geothermal heating and cooling systems to save energy – and help the Earth.

Realty Times recently published an article recently that outlines many easy ways that you can save energy at home. Some are behavioral changes:

  • Turn of the water when you brush your teeth
  • Turn down the thermostat in the winter, and turn it up in the summer
  • Turn off lights and appliances when you’re not using them (didn’t Mom always tell you this??)

But you can also do some other things to save energy and utilities, the magazine reports. To save water, take shorter showers and only run the washing machine with a full load. And here’s a tip you’ll like: Realty Times also recommends using the dishwasher rather than washing by hand! Energy Star-rated dishwashers use two to four gallons of water per load; washing by hand can use up to 24!

Other green suggestions from the magazine include donating unwanted items rather than throwing them out and looking into composting. Instead of tossing your kitchen scraps and lawn clippings into the garbage, you can compost them into a nutrient-rich product that your garden and landscape beds will love.
